Skill: Warm spell breaking record set for Chicago this week

Cold weather returns soon. Will there be a white Christmas? There is no possibility

The Chicago area is aiming to “open the window,” breaking December’s warm weather record this week.

Warm Wednesday

Wednesday’s mid-60s prediction is set to be 12 degrees warmer than Tuesday and nearly 30 degrees above normal. It could equal or surpass the 50-year-old record for the December 15, 1971 high temperature.

The predicted mid-60s high on Wednesday will mark the second 60-degree day to happen in Chicago so far this month.

Wednesday night will be showers, windy and light through midnight. The Geminids meteor shower peaks on Wednesday and the best time to check in would be from 3 a.m. until sunrise.

And while strong winds are likely to sweep the area Wednesday, it’s Wednesday night and Thursday when temperatures drop sending high winds across the area with stronger gusts likely up to 50 mph/ hour.

Strong winds could gust up to 50 mph as cooler air rolls in on Thursday. There will be mostly sunny ski days but a peak of 45 degrees will be 20 degrees colder than Wednesday’s high in Chicago.

Colder for Christmas

Visibly colder weather will drag the region into the weekend into next week (i.e. Christmas week).

Winter officially begins in just over seven days – at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 21. Christmas week looks to be moderately cold. It’s going to be 11 degrees colder this week on average (a pretty big drop) – but Christmas Day is looking to make for a bit above the normal high of around 37 degrees.

Will there be a white Christmas?

If a major blizzard occurs in Chicago’s future – it hasn’t shown up on our computer models yet. Makes the prospect of a White Christmas (1 inch or more snow on the ground on December 25th) look bleak at this point

More on record warmth

Two other records are at stake as well as a result of the warming coming midweek in Chicago: The warmest minimum temperature record for December 15 (44-1928) and possibly a record high The current record for Thursday, December 16 out of 60 was set in 1984 . (Note: Highs will be disrupted during the early hours of Thursday as daytime temperatures on Thursday will be impacted by high winds during the day)
