A man searching for deer antlers found remains near Fall Creek Road in Branson, Missouri, on December 22nd.

In addition to the skeletal remains, authorities found Koenig’s wallet and other personal items at the site.

On Monday, a forensic dental scientist confirmed the identity.

“It was not the outcome we were expecting,” Assistant Sheriff Eric Schmitt told Branson Police.

The medical examiner determined that there were no injuries and that Koenig’s death did not appear to have been caused by foul play.

Koenig’s mother, Tracy, said KOLR that their family was heartbroken over the news.

“My son is an incredible person. Literally, bigger than life. Not just physically, but about everything about him. He’s a big, beautiful, gentle giant with a heart of gold,” Tracy told the magazine.

“We appreciate that they have given us some time and space at this time to heal quietly as a family.”

NEVER FORGET TO GET ‘OFF GRID’

The former MMA fighter was last seen on February 8, 2020, at the Peach Tree Inn hotel in Branson.

Koenig was a friend of the hotel owner and had stayed there for a few nights before his sudden disappearance.

That same night, Koenig texted friends asking for help, thinking he might be in danger.

At the time, Koenig could only send text messages over Wi-Fi on his phone, so he didn’t call anyone before he went missing.

However, Koenig was not reported missing until March because his mother said he had a habit of “turning off the lights” but always checking back with his family.

“Dave has been battling addiction for many years. It’s not unusual for him to go somewhere and not contact us for days, even weeks. At first we really thought that was exactly what he was doing,” Tracy said News about Branson Tri-Lakes in August.

The search for Koenig DREW garnered considerable regional and national attention, as billboards of his disappearance were displayed throughout southwestern Missouri.
