Simone Biles and other US gymnasts are suing the FBI for $1 billion over allegations that the organization failed to stop disgraced doctor Larry Nassar

OLYMPIC star Simone Biles is among a group of gymnasts suing the FBI for failing to protect her from disgraced doctor Larry Nassar.

Nassar, 58, has been sentenced to up to 175 years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a minor while he was a doctor on the US gymnastics team.

The plaintiffs allege that FBI agents knew in 2015 — more than a year before Nassar’s arrest — that he was accused of harassing athletes.

Biles and colleagues McKayla Maroney, Maggie Nichols and Aly Raisman testified before the US Senate in September 2021.

They claim the FBI failed to properly investigate their allegations against Nassar, allowing him to continue committing acts against young women and girls for another year.

Biles told the Senate: “I blame Larry Nassar and I also blame an entire system that enabled and perpetrated his abuse.

“If you allow a predator to harm children, the consequences will be quick and severe. Enough is enough.”

In a statement, his colleague Maroney said: “My fellow survivors and I have been betrayed by every institution designed to protect us.

“The US Olympic Committee, USA Gymnastics, the FBI and now the Justice Department.

“It is clear that the only way to justice and healing is through the legal process.”

Nassar was only arrested in the fall of 2016 following an investigation by Michigan State University police.

The California-based law firm Manly, Stewart & Finaldi is now planning to take action against the FBI and has around 90 plaintiffs.

They include US sensation Biles, as well as fellow Olympic gold medalists Aly Raisman and Maroney.

The plaintiffs are seeking varying amounts of damages, but their total claims are set at over $1 billion.

A smaller number of lawsuits were filed against the FBI in April 2022, with the organization declining to comment.

Director Christopher Wray faced victims at the convention last year, where he apologized for flaws in the investigation.

Wray said, “I’m especially sorry that there were people at the FBI who had their own chance to stop this monster in 2015 and failed.

“And that is inexcusable.”

He added that the FBI “deeply and deeply regrets” the victims.
