MIDLAND, Texas (Nexstar) – The Midland Police Department arrested a man accused of shooting himself in the face of an apartment complex. Jacorey Mingo, has been charged with Serious Assault with a Deadly Weapon, one 2nd felony level.

Around 11:50 p.m. on January 30, MPD officers responded to an apartment block in the 1200 block of Albert Avenue after several callers reported a man in the parking lot with a gun. , according to an arrest affidavit.

At the scene, while officers were searching for the suspect, they were heard by a witness who said he heard noises and saw the suspect running up the stairs and into a second-floor apartment. Officers then knocked on the door and began evacuating the apartment so they could search for the suspect, later identified as Mingo. The police found Mingo inside the hallway and put him in handcuffs.

According to the affidavit, officers then began interviewing witnesses to learn more about the events that led to the 911 call.

Two people inside a white Tahoe told officers they had gone to Mingo’s apartment to return the children to their mother, who also lived in the apartment with Mingo. They told police Mingo met them at the door with a gun in his belt. The two called the police when they returned downstairs, with Mingo following, pulling a gun from his belt and pointing it at them, according to the affidavit.

The pair told investigators that as they were driving away, Mingo opened fire on their retreating vehicle. The affidavit says that officers found four used holsters from a 9mm gun, matching the type of weapon Mingo was carrying.

While they were investigating, a woman knocked one of the officers down and told them she was walking home through the parking lot when Mingo opened fire on her. She said she “saw the flash of the gun and felt the bullets follow”.

As of Friday afternoon, Mingo remains in custody at the Midland County Detention Center, with bail still pending.
