Shocking moment: thug hits cop in disgusting attack – before cop unleashes police dog on him

This is the moment a thug was thrown to the ground by a police dog after slapping a police officer in the face.

Shocking bodycam footage shows Sapphire rushing to PC Steve Matthews’ aid from Humberside Police when he was violently assaulted while on patrol in Old Town, Hull, in September last year.

The clip begins with PC Matthews finishing a fight – but one of the yobs then turns and punches him in the face.

PC Matthews quickly got to his feet and immediately freed Sapphire, the dog, from the trunk of his squad car.

The video then shows the well-trained pooch grabbing the violent bat and bringing him to the ground.

She continued to prevent other members of the man’s group from getting involved in the situation – but unfortunately the brave dog was injured during the altercation.

PC Matthews said: “Sapphire was hit a couple of times and had a graze on his front leg. She was fine but was at the vet as a precaution.

“I had a concussion from the blow and several other blows afterwards and had blurred vision in my eye for a few hours, but we were both back at work after our routine days off.”

He added: “To put it in context, just a few weeks before this Sapphire tracked down and found a suicidal missing boy who walked back to the car with us and made a fuss of her. She’s a sure dog!’

The 21-year-old man appeared in Hull Magistrates Court last year in connection with the incident and pleaded guilty to actual assault, assault and assault on a first responder.

He was given a 26-week suspended sentence for 12 months and ordered to pay £100 in victim’s surcharge, £200 in court costs and £900 in victim’s compensation.

He was also required to do unpaid work, participate in rehabilitation programs, and obey the no-alcohol rule.

PC Matthews added: “As with all canine operations of this nature, the incident was independently investigated and I was the subject of that investigation. It was independently determined that I had acted in accordance with the law and no action was taken.”

He hopes the video will show how quickly evenings can turn violent during the festive season.

He explained: “We know that for so many of you, Christmas is a happy and memorable time of year when families, friends and colleagues gather to celebrate a ‘merry’ Christmas over a drink or two.

“While we really want our communities to have a merry Christmas, it’s really important that you do so safely as you head out to celebrate, and I want to make it particularly clear that any form of attack on our officers and staff will never be tolerated and is totally unacceptable.”
