The incident happened while students at Lafrancis Hardiman Elementary School in the Wyandanch School District were playing in Wyandanch Park.

1010WINS reports that 18 children were injured, seven of whom had to be taken to hospital.

The remaining children were treated at the scene, according to Suffolk Deputy Fire Safety Coordinator Paul Miller.

According to police, 14 children were on the slide when it overturned.

Cops told the outlet a broken leg was among the more serious injuries.

None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

According to official information, the victims were mostly six and seven years old.

Parents and teachers who witnessed the incident said it was “terrible”.

“The left side of the bouncy castle was raised,” a witness told 1010WINS.

“And as it rose, you saw him go over first. You saw that other little girl clinging to her life. It was terrible. And then other children followed.”

Parents questioned whether safety protocols were being followed, but Jacob Khoury, manager of Jump Around Party Rentals, claims everything has been done correctly.

“The bouncy castle was properly secured,” Khoury told ABC7.

“I was here this morning to install it myself.”

Khoury noted to the outlet that the school district did not choose to hire an attendant to supervise the children as they climb the bouncy castle.

“A lot of schools hire a caregiver,” he told the outlet.

“Not this one. They didn’t pay for anyone to be here.”

The school district has launched an investigation into the incident, with Superintendent Dr. Gina Talbert released a statement.

“We recognize that this is a very frightening event witnessed by our young scientists, collaborators and families, and we are deeply concerned as to how this could have happened,” said Talbert.

“The District immediately launched a thorough investigation into the cause of this situation, including working with the company that provided the inflatable boats.

“We will provide more information as it becomes available. At this time, our priority is the health and well-being of the students who may have been injured and the students who attended the event.”

Wyandanch is a city in Suffolk County on Long Island.
