Shocking details in deadly attack on doctor who was repeatedly stabbed after being hit by a car

A BIZARRE series of events led to the death of a doctor after being hit by a car before being repeatedly stabbed in a fatal attack.

Paramedic Michael Mammone, 58, was killed in the strange attack in Dana Point, California on Wednesday.

Police say Vanroy Smith, 39, hit Mammone with his car around 3pm before exiting the vehicle and stabbing the doctor multiple times.

Smith was stopped by several witnesses who waited for police to arrive to arrest him.

According to witnesses, Smith was holding a BB gun as he approached Mammone before pulling a knife to stab him.

Mammone was pronounced dead at the hospital.

At the time, investigators said there were no links between the two men.

“Right now we don’t really understand why…in terms of motivation and any kind of relationship,” said Orange County Sheriff Sgt. Mike Woodruff.

“Investigators are keeping all options open to tick these boxes to ensure they don’t leave anything undetected.”

Providence Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach, where Mammone worked, issued a statement calling the doctor’s death a “staggering tragedy.”

“The entire family at Mission Hospital mourns the loss of an incredible doctor and friend,” the statement said.

“We will honor the commitment of Dr. Recognize Mammone for our community and his passion for medicine as we continue to provide exceptional care.”

Hospital staff told Fox 11 that Mammone is a keen bike rider since he lives a few blocks from the hospital.

He was killed less than a mile from where he worked.

“That’s the irony of this whole thing,” said cardiologist Dr. Dawn Aatwal.

“If a patient had been brought in his condition, he would have done everything to save that person. He saved so many lives here and he died very close to where he saved hundreds of lives.”

Smith was charged with murder.
