A WOMAN’s heartbreaking final text message to her husband before she was found dead after a hike has surfaced.
Kathleen Patterson, 60, told her 37-year-old husband that hours before she was reported missing after a hike in Arizona on Sunday morning, she “went off the route”.
Steve Patterson told KPHO-TV his wife’s text read: “Hey baby I’ve lost my route. I am fine. Much water. It’s all ok.”
The message was sent at 10:02 a.m., and Patterson was reported missing that night after failing to return from her hike.
Patterson’s car was parked in the parking lot at the trailhead.
A search quickly followed, with more than 200 volunteers sweeping the area on Tuesday.
She was only found on Wednesday when a volunteer searcher came across the body about 200 meters from the popular trail.
“Kathleen Patterson has been located. Unfortunately, she was found dead by a volunteer searcher at the Spur Cross Conservation Area,” the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday.
An inquest into the death has been launched, but police say no third-party negligence is suspected.
The Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area is a 2,200-acre county park located about 40 miles north of Phoenix.
Patterson’s family said she was an avid hiker.
