A MAN was attacked in a horrific carnage by an alligator lurking underwater as shocking video showed the animal fighters.
The alligator was caught in a pond in Sanibel, Fla., Thursday afternoon after the attack earlier that day.
The Sanibel Police Department received a 911 call just after 11 a.m. after an adult male was bitten in a pond near a general store on the island.
According to officials, the man had been using the pond to wash his hands when the alligator bit him.
The man was able to free himself and call the police, while people at the scene put tourniquets on them until medical help arrived.
The victim sustained a serious injury to his right forearm and was rushed to a hospital by Lee County EMS.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission arrived with a trapper and caught the alligator around 2 p.m.
Video showed the animal being pulled out of the pond as it snapped at officers.
The alligator was known to officers as it spent its days in the pond next to Bailey’s Market on Sanibel.
“He was at the water’s edge where the alligator is known to be, and the alligator reached up and grabbed his arm,” said Dr. Benjamin Abo, Medical Director of Sanibel Fire.
“There was a pretty deep tear on his arm on his arm,” he added.
A chilling photo showed the man’s bloodied arm after the attack.
“The man was sitting there with a makeshift tourniquet, which was one of the things that saved his life,” Abo said.
It is likely that once captured, the alligator will be euthanized.
Abo urged people to be careful when near the water.
“The most important thing is to understand what can happen and the best thing would be to prevent it, so be careful around the water, especially in brackish water.”
Luckily the man will be able to keep his arm after the attack thanks to the fire brigade who get to him quickly.
