Officials were responding to an incident regarding a vehicle involved in a robbery on the evening of May 27, officials said in a statement.

Police conducted a car stop and a male driver got out of the vehicle and ran from the scene.

Two officers reportedly pursued the driver.

A second occupant, Leonna Hale, exited the passenger side and went to the rear of the vehicle, court documents show.

The officers tried to give her orders and then found that she was armed.

Police officers said she pointed a gun at her after she got out of the car and then they opened fire on her.

Court documents say officers’ bodycam footage shows them ordering Hale to drop the gun before pointing the gun at them, which prompted her to fire three shots.

An officer told investigators that she fired once after fearing Hale would shoot her.

Another officer told investigators he believed Hale pointed the gun at him.

Hale was taken to a hospital for treatment after the incident.

The extent of Hale’s injuries is unknown, but officials said she is in stable condition.

A bystander – named only Shédanja – said Hale told police she was unarmed and pregnant.

Shédanja told The Kansas City Star, “She didn’t have a gun on her. She didn’t even have a stick in her hand.

Shédanja later posted footage to Facebook, where she claimed Hale “ran away three steps as she was afraid everyone was coming at her with guns in their faces.”

However, investigators determined that Hale displayed a gun during her encounter with officers based on a review of bodycam footage.

Hale also attempted to flee in the footage, investigators ruled.

They confirmed a handgun was found in the parking lot near the suspect’s vehicle.

Kansas City Police Department interim chief Joseph Mabin said, “We never want to get into situations like this. Not the public as a police authority.

“Every time it happens, it’s a shame for our community.
