A MOTHER found dead at her home over the weekend was shot dead by her son, police officers said Monday.
Police officers responded to the scene just after midnight on Saturday and found that Ayobiyi Abeni Cook, 29, had been shot dead.
The son initially told police that a man fled the home after the shooting, but authorities determined the boy was not telling the truth.
“The child ended up giving a true account of what happened,” said Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief David Agee.
Sheriff’s office investigators determined that the son “unintentionally fired a firearm that struck his mother and caused her death.”
“Crime scene evidence suggests the shooting was unintentional and the crime is being addressed through the family court system.”
Cook’s husband, a Birmingham police officer, was working when she died.
She had another son in addition to the 12-year-old, who was also reportedly home at the time of the shooting.
“The family has been cooperative throughout the process and the child will remain with them,” Agee said.
“This offense is a tragedy for the Cook family and the entire community.”
Friends and family have taken to social media to share their sadness at the loss of Cook.
The mother had stated her profession as a registered nurse on her Facebook page.
“You were the sweetest person and kind to everyone near and far,” one person wrote.
“The most beautiful person to meet,” said another.
