She disappeared on November 2, 2016, sparking a frantic search involving family members, police and the FBI.

Her family feared that she had been kidnapped after jogging.

She was found 22 days later on Thanksgiving by a driver near a freeway – more than a hundred miles from her home.

But, say the police Papini was never kidnapped As police later found out, she had reportedly been staying with an ex-partner who lived about 600 miles from her home.

Here, The Sun looks at the seven chilling clues behind the story of her alleged kidnapping.

TEXT TO HUSBAND

Papini was reported missing on November 2, 2016.

Just after 10:30 a.m. local time that morning, she asked her husband Keith if he was coming home for lunch.

He replied to her message and said it wouldn’t be him.

Around 5 p.m. that evening, Keith returned to her Mountain Gate home but was unable to locate Papini or her two children, causing panic.

EARPHONES AND HAIR FOUND

Keith used the Find My iPhone app, which allowed her to locate her device.

He spotted her earbuds loosely wrapped around her phone — less than a mile from her home.

Strands of hair were also spotted near the intersection of Old Oregon Trail and Sunrise Drive.

After making the discovery, Keith reported his wife missing, sparking a widespread search.

He told Good Morning America at the time: “Anyone who knows my wife knows there is no reason for her to leave.

“She was definitely kidnapped against her will.”

MYSTERY OF THE HISPANIC “KIDNAPPERS”

Search efforts lasted about three weeks before a motorist found the mother of two.

Papini was reunited with her husband Keith and their two children.

When questioned by police officers, she claimed to have been held by two Hispanic women.

She claimed her “kidnappers” were armed with a pistol, beat her and held her captive in a basement.

The mother claimed that one of them left her on the side of the road.

“SELF INJURED INJURIES”

Police officers investigating the case said in 2016: “Sherri looked battered and bruised, her hair was cut to shoulder length and she had a brand mark on her right shoulder.”

Keith told GMA, “My first sight was my wife in a hospital bed.”

He said she had both yellow and black bruises.

Keith added, “She was branded and I could feel her scabs rising up from under my fingers.”

The mother of two provided FBI investigators with sketches of the alleged kidnappers.

She said one was in his 20s and 30s, about 5’7″ and had curly dark hair.

The other alleged kidnapper was between 40 and 50 years old and had long black hair.

Papini underwent a forensic examination, but detectives found no female DNA on her body.

But police at the time believed she had been kidnapped – despite apparent inconsistencies in their report.

She now assumes that her injuries were “self-inflicted”. ABC.

WENT FOR A RUN

The investigation also continued after Papini was found and CCTV footage released in 2017 as part of the investigation.

At the time, it appeared to show the mother running away from her alleged kidnappers.

Footage showed Papini walking towards a church before heading back to the freeway.

Cops said she stopped a driver – about seven minutes after the footage was taken.

Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Brian Jackson narrates PEOPLE: “She was looking for help.

“She saw a building and didn’t know what it was and sought help.

“It was 4 a.m. and there was no one there.”

TEXTS TO ANOTHER MAN

Police also found that Papini had texted a Detroit man. Michigan – Days before she disappeared.

Jackson said, “It was a previous contact she had years ago.”

He explained that the person was someone she had met before and stayed in touch with.

Jackson said the man visited the Golden State but not Redding – Papini’s hometown.

He added: “There is no indication that they met”.

The man was questioned and the police decided that he had nothing to do with the alleged kidnapping.

Police also ruled out Papini’s husband, Keith, as a possible suspect.

TEENAGE STEAMER

It was reported that Papini ran away from home during her teenage years.

In 2000, mother Loretta Graeff claimed her then 21-year-old daughter had self-harmed and blamed her, according to an 911 call log obtained by the Sacramento Bee.

It was also claimed that she wanted advice because Papini was reportedly planning to move back in with her mother.

Details in the police report were scant, as it was never known if Papini actually harmed himself ABC.

Lt. Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Pat Kropholler told the outlet that calls had been made because the family was seeking advice.

Papini has since been charged with false information and involvement in mail fraud.

Phillip A. Talbert, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California, said, “Ultimately, the investigation determined that there was no kidnapping and that time and resources could have been used to investigate actual crimes, protect the community, and protect resources sacrifices were wasted.”

Shasta County Sheriff Michael Johnson added, “Everyone involved in this investigation had a common goal: to discover the truth about what happened to Sherri Papini on November 2, 2016 and who was responsible.”

The mother faces charges of mail fraud and could face up to 20 years in prison.

She faces up to five years in prison after being accused of lying to officials.
