Sheff Utd shock £3m for Malmo star Anel Ahmedhodzic but face transfer battle with Blackburn

SHEFFIELD UNITED make a surprise £3million move for Malmo centre-back Anel Ahmedhodzic.

The Blades have cash for the 23-year-old Bosnian, who is on a season-long loan at Bordeaux.

Ahmedhodzic’s old boss Jon Dahl Tomasson is also interested in him for Blackburn.

United could also pick up former Crystal Palace midfielder Nya Kirby, 22, who was on loan at Blackpool and Tranmere before her release.

Sheffield United finished fifth in the Championship last season and secured a play-off spot.

But in the semi-finals they were beaten on penalties by Nottingham Forest – and Steve Cooper’s side won promotion with a win over Huddersfield in the final.

Meanwhile, Blackburn is looking to strengthen his squad after losing Joe Rothwell.

The midfielder left the team at the end of the season when his contract expired and has now signed for newly promoted Premier League club Bournemouth.

Scott Parker tried to land the midfielder, who has signed a four-year contract, in January but saw his approach repelled by Blackburn.

Rothwell, 27, expired on his contract at Ewood Park before moving to the South Coast where the Cherries got there ahead of a string of clubs.

Bournemouth boss Neil Blake said: “Joe has been on our radar for a while and we’re delighted to bring him to the club.

“Not surprisingly we had a lot of competition to sign Joe so we are delighted that he has chosen AFC Bournemouth as the next step in his career.

“Joe has proven to be an outstanding midfielder in the Championship over the past few seasons and we believe he can continue his development under head coach Scott Parker and his coaching staff.”
