SAN Francisco International Airport has been evacuated, leaving thousands of passengers stranded amid reported police activity outside the terminal.
The city’s Bay Area Rapid Transit issued an alert about a station closure due to police activity.
SFBARTAlert initially tweeted at 8:42 p.m. local time about service disruptions due to the incident.
An update tweet released a short time later said: “There is a station closure at San Francisco Int’l Airport due to police activity. The Samtrans bus service is available between Millbrae and SFO in both directions. Samtrans accepts BART tickets as fare.”
Traffic in and around the airport is reportedly backed up as a result of the ongoing incident.
Multiple reports indicate that the international terminal has been evacuated and police have swarmed to the scene.
Stranded passengers have taken to social media to share their experiences, with some estimating thousands of people are outside the terminal.
Other passengers have said that upon landing at the airport they received a warning on their phones to avoid the terminal.
A passenger shared the warning on Twitter, which reads: “Emergency Alert: Due to ongoing police activity, the international terminal is being evacuated. Please avoid it.”
It is unclear what type of incident it is.
The situation is ongoing.
