She told news.com.au: “Surprisingly, women seem to feel safer sharing basic sexual needs on the internet anonymously, than at home with their partners.

“What’s even more astonishing is that women engage in sexual behaviors that not only they don’t enjoy, but include physical discomfort, distress, or pain.”

So what are these sexual acts? Among the top offenders, Nadia says, are those who reproduce sexual acts commonly seen in porn – like slapping, suffocating and spitting.

A survey in 2019 of the Savanta ComRes research group found that more than a third of women who had ever been slapped, suffocated, vomited, or spit on were unwanted during consensual sex.

Nadia added: “To be clear, I’m not interested in women engaging in the choking game of porn. I’ve been known to voluntarily engage in it when the mood goes up and down.

“What bothers me about the dialogue that women are having sex with today, is the lack of communication that emerges when it comes to basic concerns like consent and comfort.

“While I often hear it from male readers, it is crude to suggest that the solution to this problem lies in women simply speaking up in bed…

“Instead, we need to ask ourselves why women don’t feel safe enough to do it in the first place.”

Nadia adds that society needs to be proactive in creating spaces where women can voice their feelings about joy, comfort and approval.
