An investigation revealed that the pickup truck struck the SUV head-on, injuring numerous occupants in both vehicles, according to authorities.
Five of the fatalities were driving in the SUV, the Texas Department of Public Safety said in a statement.
Among them were two children and the driver, The Associated Press reported.
Another young passenger in the SUV was taken to a San Antonio hospital in critical condition.

A male driver and a passenger in the Ford F-150 pickup were pronounced dead on the spot.
Their names and ages have not yet been released.
No one else was involved in the crash, according to DPS, which did not immediately release more details.
It comes just weeks after two cheerleaders were killed earlier this month when a police officer ran a red light in Brusly, Louisiana.
Maggie Dunn, 17, and Caroline Gill, 16, were killed while Dunn’s brother Liam was injured when Addis Police Officer David Cauthron, 42, rammed into their car.
Cauthron, who was chasing a car thief, was driving about 86 mph, according to WBRZ reports, and was not stepping on the brakes before the accident.
