Serial killer Levi Bellfield ‘did NOT murder Megan and Lin Russell despite chilling confession, investigation into disclosure’

Serial killer Levi Bellfield did not murder Megan and Lin Russell – despite his chilling confession to the horrific crime, an official investigation is reportedly being completed.

Monster Bellfield, who is serving a life behind bars for the murders of Milly Dowler and two other women, admitted to the horrific 1996 murders earlier this year.

However, a report by the Criminal Case Review Commission is reported to say he is not responsible for the Russell murders, the Daily Mail reports.

Instead, they’ll put all the blame on drug addict Michael Stone, they say.

Stone has already been convicted of murdering a mother and daughter in Chillenden, Kent, although he has long maintained his innocence.

Ms Russell and her daughters Megan, six, and Josie, nine, were attacked with a claw hammer as they walked down a country lane returning from a swimming gala.

The victims were tied up by a stranger in the random ambush and repeatedly beaten with clubs.

Josie survived despite life-threatening injuries.

She is said to have found the latest developments deeply traumatic.

It took the panel five years to reportedly conclude that there was no evidence Bellfield or anyone else was involved in the murders.

Bellfield wrote a four-page confession from his cell in February. It was submitted to the CCRC by Stone’s attorney, Paul Bacon.

However, the panel reportedly found that Bellfield had treated his admission as “playing” with Mr Bacon.

The attorney has spent 15 years trying to prove Stone’s innocence.

Meanwhile, a shoelace found at the scene has also undergone extensive forensic analysis after disappearing in police custody for 14 years.

“IT WAS A GAME FOR HIM”

It was hoped that a knot in the tip could contain DNA revealing the killer’s identity, but no trace of DNA was found from Bellfield, Stone or any potential suspect, sources told the Mail.

Bellfield has been obsessed with the Russell murders since 2017, it’s understood.

He has repeatedly claimed responsibility for the murders of other prisoners – even saying he kept a hair tie as a souvenir – before later denying it, they say.

A previous police investigation also found no evidence he was responsible, and his then-girlfriend Jo Collings said he was at a party nearly 100 miles away on the day of the murder.

The sick killer has also admitted to murdering a woman named Judith Gold in London in 1990.

SICK PRISON CELL “CONFESSION”

He is serving a life sentence for the murders of Milly, 13, French student Amelie Delagrange, 22, and Marsha McDonnell, 19, between 2002 and 2004.

He was also convicted of the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy in 2004.

Sources say there is no reason for Stone’s conviction to go before the appeals court if no further evidence emerges.

His conviction was previously overturned.

However, he was found guilty in a second trial in 2001, partly on the basis of a confession he is said to have made in prison.

Kent Police have previously said they have no intention of re-investigating the killings.

A CCRC spokesman said: “We have no further comment to make other than that the case is still under review.”

Levi Bellfield’s beliefs

Bellfield will die in prison as he serves a life sentence. He is also suspected of a number of other violent crimes.

March 2002 – Milly Dowler is kidnapped on her way home from school in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. A major search is launched for the 13-year-old, but six months later her remains are found in Hampshire woods

February 2003 – Marsha McDonnell, 19, is attacked by Bellfield after getting off a bus with friends after a movie tour. She was found fatally injured near her home in Hampton, south west London and died two days later

May 2004 – Kate Sheedy, 18, crosses the road in Isleworth, west London after becoming nervous about Bellfield’s car. Then Levi ran down her and ran over her body. Despite injuries, including a ruptured liver and a collapsed lung, she survives

August 2004 – Amelie Delagrange was a 22-year-old French student who had been living in Twickenham for several months. She was hit with a hammer and found on Twickenham Green with severe head injuries. She died that same night
