Savannah Marshall fails to become the undisputed world champion while classy Claressa Shields hosts a master class

WONDER WOMAN Claressa Shields dethroned our girl Savannah Marshall to become the undisputed middleweight queen and settle their decades-long feud.

The 27-year-old – a two-time Olympic gold medalist and pro three-weight ruler – dominated the 31-year-old Hartlepool hero on points at the top of the historic all-female O2 chart.

And the Michigan legend did so all the while caring for her two nieces and nephew while her sister recovered from personal troubles.

Ten years after Marshall defeated Shields in amateurs in 2012, the judges rightly called it: 96-94, 97-93 and 97-93.

A moronic section of the impressively packed crowd booed the American anthem and proud Patriot Shields seemed determined to punish them.

Dressed in the Stars and Stripes and with Mr. T on her socks, she feared no foe or fool.

Shields was injured in the second, but she showed incredible determination to dig deep and hit back with a left hook that tanned the normally pale complexion on Marshall’s right cheek. It was a brilliant move.

By 11, Silent Assassin Marshall was so crippled with shyness that she could barely speak, 20 years later, in the third, she was chasing a monster in front of 20,000 people, peppering them with insults and punches.

During an exchange in front of the press desks, she yelled “Come on!” as she ran to her.

The fourth was a mix of brawls and technical boxing up close and personal. Marshall left her size and range advantages in her corner and went in tow with her smaller opponent. It was a shootout.

Marshall’s Honeyshot right hand was awesome but kept leaving it open to Shields’ left hook and the fifth was one of the worst sessions for it.

Marshall went for a handful of bruises at the end of the sixth round, it was their worst round of the fight yet, but his legs were honest.

Marshall – turned down by a handful of companies for a part-time job in lockdown – had 20,000 fans screaming her name in the seventh as it appeared her engine was running on fumes and Shields with her Philly grenade defense throughout the lap Showboating make eight.

The American champions were just too good but everyone would love to see the second leg now tied 1-1.

After her overwhelming success, Shields said, “I did what I do in training and I got the job done.

“I want to thank Savannah Marshall – it was a special night for women’s boxing and I think it was the fight of the year.”

Marshall added, “She wasn’t as fast as I thought she was, but she’s a brilliant champion. I would be ready for a third.”
