Russia’s tainted war crimes in Ukraine will top 100,000 individual cases, officials warn

OFFICIALS in Ukraine believe they will identify more than 100,000 war crimes cases by Russian forces – with some of the horrifying stories being told for the first time today.

Ukraine’s chief prosecutor Iryna Venediktova says her team is already investigating nearly 14,000 cases.

But the true number committed by Vladimir Putin’s troops is expected to be over 100,000 based on estimates from the first three months of the bloody conflict, a source in her office says.

Prosecutors there are already building war crimes cases but expect the trial to take months given the scale of the horrors already uncovered.

It comes as Russia is poised to take Severodonetsk in the east, but is also putting more pressure on the country’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, with additional attacks.

The Sun on Sunday can reveal details of war crimes that took place in the north-east city when the Russians were last there.

It covers an ongoing criminal case in Kharkiv in which three bodies were found burned in a basement and evidence of arson was found. Crime scene experts were involved in the investigation.

The man, woman and child were tortured and shot dead before being covered with car tires and set on fire.

The country’s security service is also investigating the rape of a woman in the village of Little Rogan as a war crime.

She and her family were hiding in a school, but a Russian military officer broke in and ordered her into a classroom before raping her for five hours, while torturing her while laughing. The others managed to escape.

Ms Venediktova said: “Today we have almost 14,000 war crimes-only cases and almost 6,000 war crimes-related cases.

“That means we have a huge body of precedents and we’re getting more every day. It’s 100, 200 extra, it depends on the day.”

A source in Kharkiv told The Sun on Sunday officials believe the real number is as high as 100,000 based on what they’ve found so far.

It comes as Ukrainian officials are beginning to unravel the full horror of the invasion’s first weeks, as Russian troops slid near the capital Kyiv and had to be driven back from cities like Bucha and Kharkiv.

The source said: “New horrors are being uncovered every day. The level of savagery and barbaric behavior is unheard of.

“The focus is on gathering as much evidence as possible to ensure justice is done to the monsters responsible for these evil crimes.

“It looks like there are already 100,000 and there is still so much more to discover.

“It was really upsetting. Investigators walk through the cities where Russia invaded at the beginning and find unimaginable horror on an unprecedented scale.”

More than 1,000 medical or educational buildings were destroyed in the conflict.
