His death coincided with the first expressions of anger and frustration at the number of coffins that have now returned to Russia, although those officially acknowledged to have fallen in Ukraine are considered a the fraction of the total that best estimates suggest is now ‘many thousands’.

He was awarded the Order of Courage by a decree signed by Vladimir Putin.

He hails from Ulan-Ude, the capital of the Siberian republic of Buryatia, a predominantly Buddhist region that has suffered a disproportionate number of deaths among Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine.

He was killed in a mortar fire while deploying communication equipment across the river.

He was killed on February 26, but his funeral took place only on March 11.

And former NATO chief Rose Gottemoeller thinks Putin’s forces have been weakened by Ukraine’s resolve.

She told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I think the Russians threw in Kyiv some of their most elite forces to begin with.

“They were hoping for a lightning strike to basically assassinate President Zelenskytake down the government in Kyiv and have a quick victory.

“But it didn’t work out that way and they ended up stopping on the highway outside Kyiv.

“Now we have seen those forces disperse, and disperse into the forest.

“But I wonder frankly if they are capable of regrouping at this point because their logistics are in such a dire state.

“They don’t really have the fuel supplies needed to push Kyiv. So I rather doubt that they will achieve much success in an attack on Kyiv, at least with those forces. “
