TWO Russian soldiers have died after eating poisonous pies given to them by Ukrainian citizens, Ukrainian intelligence has claimed.
The soldiers of the 3rd Motor Rifle Division are said to have died instantly after receiving the delicacies as a “gift” from local people in Izium.
Another 28 Russians are said to have been taken to intensive care after the poisoning, while hundreds of others are said to be suffering from “serious illnesses” from poisoned food and drink.
Ukraine’s Intelligence Ministry wrote on Saturday: “Ukrainians are resisting the occupiers with all available means.
“According to available information, residents of Izium district (Kharkiv region) ‘treated’ Russians of the 3rd Motorized Rifle Division of the Russian Federation with poisoned pies.
“As a result, two squatters died at once, and another 28 were taken to intensive care. Your current condition will be clarified.”
It added: “About 500 other soldiers of the Russian Federation’s 3rd Motorized Rifle Division are in hospitals due to severe alcohol poisoning of unknown cause.”
Izium is expected to see more fighting in the coming weeks as Putin is known to be redeploying his troops for fighting in eastern Ukraine.
Soldiers could use the city, located near the Russian border, as a base for attacks in the Donbass Daily mail reports.
Control of the city would also allow the Russians to isolate Ukraine’s southern forces from those fighting to the north.
It comes like Ukraine said it had regained control of the Kyiv region, with Russian troops withdrawing from around the capital and the city of Chernihiv.
Ukrainian officials said Saturday their forces had retaken more than 30 towns and villages around Kyiv, claiming full control of the capital region for the first time since the Russian invasion began.
“The entire Kyiv region is liberated from the invaders,” Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar wrote on Facebook.
But there is too much mourning in the country to celebrate.
