A Russian mother strangled her eight-year-old son to death and threatened to kill the rest of her family in an angry and paranoid state brought on by the Ukraine war, officials say.
Natalia Aleksandrovna Hitchcock, 41, said her murdered son Oliver “would have been better off dead” than “abused” by him Russian government.
Hitchcock has been charged with first-degree first degree murder and first-degree first degree murder after killing little Oliver and trying to drown her older son days earlier, the authorities said Sheboygan Falls police station.
On March 30, police responded to an emergency call from the boys’ father. The officers found the lifeless body of the strangled boy and immediately took him to the hospital.
The older boy, 11, had found his brother unconscious on the floor at the family’s Wisconsin home while “his mother was lying on the bed with a large knife,” authorities said. The screams of the surviving son woke his father, who had been taking a nap.
While the father tried to perform life-saving measures on Oliver, the mother “run around the apartment in a daze with a knife and said she would kill everyone in the house,” according to a criminal complaint.
When police arrived, the father told responding officers that Hitchcock tried to attack him and that she stabbed herself, the complaint says.
The father told officers the mother was from Russia and suffered from “tantrums”.
The husband “sensed that the war between Russia and Ukraine was ratcheting up Hitchcock more than ever and that she was starting to drink alcohol.”
The complaint also reports that Hitchcock was concerned that people from a larger city would come and attack her.
In the days leading up to the attack, her husband said Hitchcock asked him to stay home from work and buy survival gear, including a camp stove, fuel, knives and guns.
When authorities asked Hitchcock’s husband if she had struggled with mental illness, he replied, “Now she does.”
During interrogation, the mother told police officers that after strangling her son, she tried to overdose on painkillers and stabbed herself in the chest in an attempt to “cut her heart,” authorities said.
She then shared her paranoia with police, saying that she felt she had been poisoned and that she feared her husband was plotting to sell Hitchcock and their children to the dark web.
The complaint said Hitchcock said she “had no control over her thoughts and heard voices in her head” on the fateful day.
“She started thinking that the Russian government would take her children and abuse them.”
Hitchcock admitted to strangling her child. When asked why she did it, she replied, “I didn’t want him to be abused.”
Oliver died of his injuries in hospital two days after the attack.
When police visited the county jail to inform Hitchcock of her son’s death, the complaint says she responded calmly, saying, “Well, I think I accomplished what I set out to do at the time.”
She then got emotional, saying she did it because she was worried about her son’s future and “felt he would be better off dead.”
When asked if she tried to drown her older son, Hitchcock claimed she “did him no harm.”
“She said she told the boys they needed to wake up and see what was going on around them,” the complaint said, adding that Hitchcock only wanted to scare him.
“She said she dunked his head under water to scare him into realizing his life was in danger.”
During Hitchcock’s first day of trial on Tuesday, she found her “visibly emotional” husband in the crowd and spoke to him directly, sources say temporomandibular joint4.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know what happened,” she told him, according to the outlet.
Police have worked with Sheboygan Falls Elementary School, where Oliver was a student, to provide resources for his fellow students.
“We encourage county parents to speak up with their children and take care of their mental health,” the police chief said said Eric Miller.
Hitchcock is being held on $1 million bail. Her next court hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
