US officials claim that despite Putin’s withdrawal of troops from the region, Kyiv remains at risk of airstrikes.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said, “What I just want to say is that the city in general continues to be under threat of air and bombing raids. We continue to see this even as the Russians reposition some of their troops.
“Before they started repositioning, they were basically in a defensive crouch, they weren’t advancing off the ground in town anymore.
“But despite all of this, we continue to see that the city is very much at risk from air raids.”
And despite Russia’s announcement that it was withdrawing troops from near the Ukrainian capital and northern city of Chernihiv, explosions could be heard in Kyiv on Wednesday morning.
The governor of Donetsk region said yesterday that Russian forces shelled several towns on the border separating Ukrainian and Russian-controlled areas in the region.
According to the latest UN figures, more than four million people have fled Ukraine since the invasion began.
