RUSSIA could use new-age laser weapons to jam western satellites or Ukrainian drones in the current war, a senior Kremlin official has hinted.
Yury Borisov, Deputy Prime Minister in charge of military development, said the new Peresvet mobile system has already been deployed by the Moscow Armed Forces.
He said: “It can ‘blind’ all satellite reconnaissance systems of an ‘enemy’ up to a 1,500 km orbit. [932 miles]thanks to laser radiation.”
Western satellites were reportedly used to relay information about Russian military movements to Ukraine.
Borisov said Russian weapons designers were demonstrating a separate new laser system to knock down enemy drones with a burst of intense heat.
He said: “Today, our physicists have developed and are almost mass-producing laser systems that cause heat damage.
“That was shown yesterday from 5km away [3 miles] Removal… A drone burned up in five seconds and just ceased to exist.
“Future weapon systems will be based on new physical principles and will determine the combat readiness of our armed forces in the future.”
Borisov said that laser and electromagnetic broadband weapons will be replaced [conventional weapons] in the coming decades.
He added: “It’s no longer exotic, it’s already a reality.”
Putin unveiled the Peresvet – after the medieval Orthodox warrior monk Alexander Peresvet – in 2018.
Russia has been working on a number of futuristic military technologies like Peresvet.
A weapon called the “Star Warrior” capable of blasting satellites out of orbit at altitudes of up to 500 miles above the Earth.
Russian President Vladimir Putin used the weapon to destroy a redundant Soviet-era military reconnaissance satellite, Tselina-D — and blew it up into an orbiting debris field.
Putin tested the missile nine times between 2014 and 2020 before using it on Nov. 15 to destroy a real satellite, according to the Moscow-based Center for Analysis of Strategy and Technologies.
It is believed that Putin’s “Star Warrior” missile system will fire two-stage 14TS033 interceptor missiles, which in the final version can be armed with a nuclear or kinetic warhead.
