It came after mass Russia 100,000 troops at the border and Ukrainian spy chiefs say they believe A full scale invasion is planned for the new year.

And today, Ukraine confirmed it had fired US-made Javelin anti-tank missiles at Russian-backed rebels during fresh fighting taking place in the separatist Donbas region.

Amid rising tensions, Putin’s ally, Fyodor Lukyanov, warned of a “new conflict” if Nato expands further east in an article published last night.

Lukyanov, the chairman of the Russian Council on Foreign Affairs, which advises the Kremlin, also made it clear that Moscow would seek more than verbal reassurances from Nato.

“The recent round of escalation in Eastern Europe shows that the old principles of security on the continent are no longer effective,” he wrote.

“Russia will have to change the system and draw new ‘red lines’.”

He mentioned a post-World War II agreement between the Soviet Union and Finland, under which Moscow recognized Finland’s independence in exchange for its neutrality during the Cold War.

Mr. Lukyanov coolly added that “the game that led to the 2008 war between Russia and Georgia” – when Moscow invaded after claiming it was provoked – “could very well be replicated” in Ukraine.

Yesterday, Moscow accused the US secretly staged a fake nuclear attack 12 miles from the border “puts Russian forces on alert”.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu also said that US strategic bombers had made 30 flights near Russia this month in a significant escalation.

Ukrainian intelligence officials have warned Russia is planning an invasion on 10 fronts in January.

Brigadier General Budanov said The invasion will begin with air strikes and shelling followed by an aerial assault involving 3,500 paratroopers and special forces, the report said. Military Times.

This was followed by a mass offensive across the border, landings in Odessa and Mariupol, and a smaller invasion from neighboring Belarus.

Nato is always ready

Russia has always denied any aggression towards its neighbour – calling the latest reports “hysterical”.

President Putin described the troop increase as a deterrent against a new attack by the Ukrainian government.

Several ceasefire violations have been reported in the eastern regions of the country held by Moscow-backed separatists.

Kiev confirms for the first time that it has deployed US-made Javelin anti-tank missiles in the conflict is going on.

General Budanov claims they have also been used against Russian forces, who are suspected of carrying out cross-border incursions in support of the rebels.

He said the missiles have “significant psychological deterrent value that makes the Russians think twice about striking.”

Nato said it was ready to help its allies.

Brigadier General Simon Doran, of the US Marine Corps, said of a potential Russian invasion: “We are always ready to be ready.”

He told The Daily Telegraph: “Hopefully, we not only deter potential adversaries, we reassure all our partners and allies that if called upon, we will be here.

“We are fully prepared to resist any aggression from anyone globally.”
