A Western intelligence assessment revealed: “We expected multiple attacks in sequence, not a single attack.

“A potential surprise thrust against Kyiv, using precision attacks.”

Other important cities will be surrounded by Putin’s tanks and troops while being bombarded by planes and helicopters.

Serious rating comes as Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky declared tomorrow a day of unity and urged his people to stand and sing the national anthem at 10 a.m.

“We don’t know how to give up and we won’t learn to do so,” he said.

“We believe in our own strength and will build the future together. We are united by love for Ukraine.”

Last night Boris Johnson hold crisis talks with the President of the United States Joe Biden after saying it was “quite clear” that Russia would invade within days.

The Prime Minister cut short a tour of Scotland and met with spy chiefs.

This is a very, very dangerous, difficult situation.

“We are on the edge of the abyss, but there is still time for President Putin to step back.

“The signs are… at least they’re planning something that could happen in the next 48 hours. That is extremely worrisome.”

After presiding over the emergency meeting on Cobra, Secretary of State Liz Truss said a possible invasion was imminent and urged all Britons to evacuate in any way they could.

Speaking exclusively to MPs, Ms Truss said she believed it was “very likely”.

Mr Johnson will hold further talks for intelligence and military officials later today.

Armed Forces Secretary James Heappey said “all conditions have been established for the Russians to launch an attack”, adding that it “could happen without notice”.

“This is not a warning of something that could happen in three months’ time,” he said.

“This is not a warning that will be followed by other warnings.”

He said a AfghanistanAirlift of the type would not be possible if Russia controlled the sky.

Putin has set up 100 combat groups on the border – up from 60 last month and 80 last week.

‘EDGE OF A PRECIPICE’

NATO leaders were alerted 13 others were on their way.

The number 100 was seen as the key to an attack that could simultaneously hit Kyiv and encircle Ukraine’s best forces in the east.

Of all 140,000 Russians are ready to fight on the southern and eastern borders, with 40,000 taking part in exercises in Belarus to the north.

Vandals have also flooded into Ukraine and could carry out assassinations and attack electricity and gas networks, sources fear.

Russian state television began a propaganda campaign with extravagant claims that Ukrainian nationalists were about to massacre pro-Russians in the east – saying they would “kill and butcher you all, and hang your children on ropes.”

Similar tactics were used to increase domestic support for Russia’s annexation of Crimea and the seizure of land by pro-Russian forces in the Donbas in 2014.

More manipulative TV coverage followed after Putin allowed the cameras to film a bizarre exchange in which he considered going to war.

In a stage-managed clip, Putin asked his Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov if negotiations with the West will satisfy Russia’s demands or simply “prolong” forever.

Lavrov, sitting at a long conference table, said he would not allow “endless negotiations on questions that require a solution today”.

However, he urged Putin to keep the door open and insisted “there is always an opportunity”.

A British C17 transport plane was tracked yesterday to and from Kyiv to evacuate personnel.

The US says it is moving its embassy 340 miles west from Kyiv to Lviv – and ordered the destruction of computers that could fall into Russian hands.

‘ALWAYS A OPPORTUNITY’

The tycoons are said to have flown out by private jet.

Insurers have held talks amid concerns that they can no longer cover the risks of commercial flights.

Of Ukraine The government, desperate to keep the skies open, has allocated £437m to ensure the resumption of flights.

German leader Olaf Scholz flew to Kyiv ahead of his trip to meet Putin in Moscow today with a plea for peace “for the last time”.

But Putin has so far refused to budge on his demand that Ukraine never be allowed to join NATO.

President Zelensky took a risk with the Kremlin by reaffirming his country’s desire to participate.
