The Russian tyrant expected a quick victory when he ordered the invasion, but his forces met stiff Ukrainian resistance could even buckle soon.

Russia has kept the true death toll under wraps, admitting just 498 deaths on March 2.

But in an extraordinary move, Komsomolskaya Pravda reported that, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, 9,861 Russian soldiers died in Ukraine and 16,153 were injured.

The report was quickly removed, although several screenshots were taken, including by the Wall Street Journal.

Ukraine claims to have killed around 15,000 Russians and destroyed large amounts of equipment.

The new figures released by Russia are above US military estimates of 7,000 dead and up to 21,000 injured.

That is reported Russia secretly transports bodies of fallen Russian soldiers home via Belarus in trains and ambulances at night to try to hide the true extent of the death toll.

Among the Russian dead are five generals and other high-ranking commanders, including those of Elite paratrooper units.

The latest senior officer to die is the deputy commander of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, who dealt another major blow to Vladimir Putin’s forces.

Andrey Paliy, 51, a first-rank captain, is the first senior Russian naval officer killed so far in the war with Ukraine.

He was reportedly involved in Russian naval raids near the port city of Mariupol when he died, although the exact circumstances of his alleged death are unknown.

Moscow has yet to officially acknowledge his death, but it appeared to have been confirmed by fellow Russian Konstantin Tsarenko, secretary of the public council at the Nakhimov Naval School in Sevastopol.

Ukrainian official Anton Gerashchenko also claimed Paliy was killed earlier on Sunday, without giving further details.

Paliy was born in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, but refused to take a Ukrainian military oath in 1993, opting instead for service in Russia’s Northern Fleet.

He previously served on the Russian nuclear-powered missile cruiser Peter the Great and was deputy chief of the Russian Naval Academy in Sevastopol in annexed Crimea.
