Roy Keane praises Wout Weghorst as Man Utd legend hits back at doubters after striker’s goal against Forest

ROY KEANE hit back against Wout Weghorst’s doubters after scoring for Manchester United against Nottingham Forest.

Marcus Rashford wasted no time putting the Red Devils in front, storming through the Forest defense and scoring in just seven minutes.

Sam Surridge thought he’d equalized – even copying Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebration – but the goal was ruled offside by VAR.

Weghort scored his first United goal just before half-time with a fine finish on the rebound.

And Bruno Fernandes fired in the late third to seal a 3-0 win in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Loaned Dutch striker Weghorst, 30, had failed to score in his first two games for United, leading many fans to question his ability.

But Keane showered him with praise afterwards, telling Sky Sports: “Great finish, look at his [Weghorst’s] reactions.

“People have criticized him for coming to the club. That’s why he was brought into the club. Huge goal for United.”

After seeing his new boy break his duck, boss Erik ten Hag said: “I know he’s capable of it. He has a really good goal record.

“We created some other really good chances. It was good action from Antony on the right and Wout was on the rebound. It was a real striker’s goal. That’s why we got it.”

And the goalscorer himself added: “A great night for us. A great result and of course winning after that first match is a really good chance to get to the final.

“It’s always something special and you want to score goals. They prefer to have that first one as soon as possible, so I’m really happy. It was also an important moment. It gave us a much better feeling at the break.

“I just turned towards the goal hoping for a rebound and that’s exactly what happened. A good ending, it was nice.

“It’s a great result for us, let’s finish it next week.”
