TOM Selleck played a key role in helping the late Roger E. Mosley secure his iconic Magnum PI role as Theodore “TC” Calvin.
Fans are reminiscing about the life and career of Mosley, who died Sunday after sustaining injuries in a tragic car accident.
Mosley appeared as Theodore “TC” Calvin alongside Tom Selleck in eight seasons of the iconic ’80s crime drama.
The actor’s Magnum PI character, Theodore, who ran a helicopter business, often helped Tom Selleck’s character, private investigator Thomas Magnum, get out of trouble by flying him over Hawaii.
However, the beloved character almost never existed.
Apparently, another actor was willing to play TC before producers realized they needed a person of color in the main cast, Mosley said.
Selleck thought of Mosley when the two made a 1973 prison film called Terminal Island together, the Hollywood Reporter said.
Mosley wasn’t actually even interested in the role since he was mostly making films at the time, but agreed to do the pilot after being pushed by his agent.
The late actor said his agent told him, “This guy Tom Selleck is starring. Tom Selleck has done about five pilot shows… and none of them have sold.
“So, that’s what you do, Roger: sign up for the show, go to Hawaii, they treat you well for the 20 days it’s going to take to shoot the (pilot), you’ll get a lot.” Get money and then you come home.
A show with Tom Selleck always fails, and you’ll be fine.”
While Mosley was certainly successful with the program for eight and a half years, it presented some challenges.
The writers originally wrote TC as the owner of a struggling helicopter business who was a smoker and a drinker, but Mosley wanted to set a good example.
“I never get high, smoke or drink on the show or in real life,” Mosley told Ebony in 1982.
“I don’t want black kids to see that.”
The writers also flipped the characters to have Tom as the bust who was always saved by TC
Mosley’s daughter Ch-a told The Hollywood Reporter her father died Sunday morning as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident in Lynwood, California.
He died just three days after the accident at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
In a social media post, his daughter wrote, “We could never mourn the loss of such an amazing man.”
She continued, “He would HATE any crying on his behalf. It’s time to celebrate the legacy he left for all of us. i love you dad
“You loved me too. My heart is heavy but I am strong. I will take care of mom, your love for almost 60 years.
“You raised me well and she is in good hands.
The California native’s biggest film role was in Leadbelly, which premiered in 1976.
Mosley portrayed Huddie Ledbetter in a biography of the folk singer.
He admitted that role was his favorite role in a 1982 issue of Ebony magazine.
Mosley took a hiatus from acting in 2010, but then came out of retirement to appear in a 2019 episode of the Magnum PI reboot titled A Kiss Before Dying.
Mosley has been in a relationship with Toni Laudermick since 1976 and they had Ch-a together.
The star had previously married Sandra Locke in 1960 but divorced two years later.
They also had two children together who they raise together, but this part of his life is very private.
The actor has also appeared on TV shows such as Night Court, Kung Fu, Starsky and Hutch, The Rockford Files, Baretta and Sanford and Son.
His films include The Mack, Hit Man, Sweet Jesus, Preacherman and Darktown Strutters to name a few.
