ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – The Rockwood School District Board of Education held an emergency virtual meeting Tuesday night where a majority of the board voted to require masks in the district through at least February 3.

The district unanimously voted in December to make masks recommended, but not mandatory, beginning January 18. Tuesday’s vote changed those plans. This comes amid an increase in coronavirus infections in the region.

During Tuesday night’s meeting, the district’s interim superintendent, Tim Ricker, presented data showing that there were 942 new COVID cases reported in the district for the entire first half of the school year from August 24, 2021. until December 21, 2021.

The district reported 1337 new COVID cases, from December 22, 2021 to January 10, 2022. In less than three weeks, during which most of the time students were out of school due to winter break, the district surpassed the number of cases that had been calculated over a four-month period.
The district sent a letter to families following Tuesday night’s vote detailing the changes, which will go into effect Wednesday, January 12:

  • “An active student/staff will need to stay home for 5 days and if they are asymptomatic or their symptoms are in remission (no fever for 24 hours) they can return to school in 5 days. mask day (even if the school district is in a mask-recommended setting).
  • Students and staff who are closely related and healthy may remain at the school.
    • This activity will take effect again from January 3, 2022 and includes individuals who have been quarantined. The notice for all of these people to return if there are no symptoms will be sent out tomorrow.
  • Close contact with an active student/staff with multiple symptoms will need to stay home and possibly return in 5 days if they are asymptomatic and they have been fever free for 24 hours. They may return sooner if they are well and have a non-COVID medical diagnosis or a negative COVID (not home) test.
  • Building-wide announcements of positive cases will end. (Those in close contact with a positive case will still receive notifications, and the School Health Indicators on the website will continue to be updated twice a day.)
