However, there are plans to start talks about an extension next month.
And Mahrez, 31, wants to spend the rest of his years at City.
The Algerian has settled in Manchester while he and partner Taylor Ward, daughter of former striker Ashley, are expecting their first child this year.
Mahrez is in a strong negotiating position as Gabriel Jesus is primed for a move to Arsenal and uncertainty over Chelsea target Raheem Sterling’s future.
But his priority is to secure another three-year deal, with an option for another after that.
City don’t want to lose him on a free transfer and are confident the terms will be agreed with no fuss.
Mahrez has been at the Etihad since 2018 after making a £60million move from Leicester.
He has scored 63 goals in 189 games under Pep Guardiola.

And Mahrez has won many trophies during that time, including three titles.
City have already moved to effectively replace fellow strikers Jesus and Sterling with Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez.
Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips will also arrive following Fernandinho’s departure.
And Guardiola is also hoping to sign Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella.
