Rishi Sunak battles Britain’s greatest enemy – the Empire of Woke

AS if he doesn’t have enough to do, Rishi Sunak is about to declare war on the worst threat to our freedom and the western way of life.

Forget for a moment the war in Ukraine, the collapse of the NHS and fears of an economic meltdown. This is serious.

The Prime Minister rides to the rescue of democracy, free speech and the persecuted personalities of Harry Potter creator JK Rowling from the screeching cult of awakened authoritarianism.

He appoints a free speech watchdog who will challenge the angry hornet’s nest of students and academics who have turned draconian censorship into a quasi-religious inquisition.

This insane minority has hijacked America’s college campus and is now taking control of the debate here about race, gender and the radical rewriting of our national history.

No wonder poor Harry, Duke of Sussex, the new Crown Prince of Awakened, feels so welcome there.

Freedom of expression may sound like a fact of life, something we can take for granted, like fresh air and clean water.

But it was hard won against centuries of bloody oppression.

We need only look at brutal Russia, tyrannical China, murderous Iran and a host of other totalitarian regimes to see that war leader Winston Churchill was right.

“Democracy is the worst form of government,” he said after being ousted from office, “aside from all the others that have been tried.”

But democracy is nothing without freedom of speech – and a free press to publish it.

America’s Founding Fathers decided that liberty was sacred enough to be enshrined in the United States Constitution.

Now it’s being sabotaged by “You can’t say that” thugs ready to destroy the livelihoods and careers of anyone who dares disagree.

JK Rowling, who introduced generations of schoolchildren – and adults – to the joys of reading books, is her most famous martyr.

your crime? Challenging the trans definition of an adult woman as a “person who menstruates.”

“I’m sure there used to be a word for these people,” she told her 14.5 million followers. “Wumben? wimpund? woomud?”

For this heinous crime, the billionaire author was dumped by mediocre actors Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe, who became super rich thanks to their magical ways with words.

She is one of countless victims of complainants bent on eliminating dissent over the right of 16-year-olds to choose their gender and the endlessly divisive blame game over racism, slavery or climate change.

Wokery originated four decades ago in the field of health and safety, another well-intentioned attempt to save people from themselves who were turning apostate.

It has spread to the public sector, the NHS, broadcasters Sky, BBC and ITV, and to giant corporations where EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) managers dictate management policies.

It’s made possible by shadowy charity Common Purpose, which runs “leadership development” programs with a particular focus on restricting the press.

Rishi Sunak’s new Woke Czar is dubbed Cambridge professor Arif Ahmed, a critic of cancel culture.

He cut out his work. Taxpayers are funding 10,000 EDI jobs at a cost of £557m a year.

The NHS alone, which is said to be short on cash for nurses, employs 800 EDI officers at a cost of £40million.

Universities employ an average of four per person, at a cost of £30.2million.

Toby Young, founder of the esteemed Free Speech Union, says: “Arif Ahmed will be a man confronting an army of awakened warriors. . . a dove in a field full of crows.”

He is also dealing with the Church of England, an Ultra-Wake congregation led by the Holy Archbishop Justin Welby.

Welby this week ordered the CofE to cough up £100million to right “past wrongs” over slavery.

The British Museum, under direct ex-Chancellor George Osborne, wants to return the historic Elgin Marbles to Greece.

Large art galleries cover up priceless paintings because they depict black faces. Statues of historical figures are being torn down.

And eco-maniacs block the nation’s streets while rainbow-colored cops stand by or join in.

It is too late? The Scottish SNP has sold its soul for women’s rights.
