Ricky Hatton Says He Had “S******t Birthday” When Chris Eubank Jr. Was Scrapped Against Conor Benn After Failing Drug Test

RICKY HATTON has claimed his birthday was ruined by the cancellation of this weekend’s fight between Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr.

The legendary “Hitman” turned 44 today and is preparing to step into the ring himself.

The former two-weight world champion was originally scheduled to return to the ring for an eight-round exhibition match at the AO Arena Manchester on July 2.

Hatton had dropped an amazing two stone for it and even lined up with son Campbell to prepare – only to have it cancelled.

But his comeback is still underway after it was announced that his exhibition match with Marco Antonio Barrera was rescheduled for November 12.

Although still in training, he was set to celebrate his milestone today, only for the shock news that this weekend’s much-anticipated clash between Benn and Eubank was over after the former tested positive for a banned substance.

Hatton told iD Boxing: “With the news I just got, it’s my friggin’ birthday ever!”

The boxing showdown was thrown into doubt on Wednesday after it was revealed Benn had failed a drugs test before the British Boxing Board of Control pulled the plug and refused to sanction the fight.

Just two days before the weigh-in, it was revealed that Benn had failed a pre-fight drug test, which took place on Sept. 23, according to SunSport.

The British bruise reported a negative result for clomiphene, which is widely used as a drug to treat infertility in women who are not ovulating.

However, it can also increase testosterone levels in men, which is why it is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s banned list.

After the initial news broke, Hatton had said: “It’s a farce to hear the news that the main event may not go ahead, but everything has to be done for the right reasons – the safety of the boxers.

“It’s just a shame because everyone on the bill, including the main event, worked so hard.”

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has campaigned against British boxing bosses and vowed to take legal action.

Eubank Jr. struck out after a belated attempt to save the fight failed by blasting his rival for “using an illegal substance.”

But Benn has now vowed to clear his name, insisting he is a “clean athlete”.

Meanwhile, the Manchester-born Hatton retired after losing to Vyacheslav Senchenko in 2012.

Now he’s hoping to turn back the years and put on one last show in his hometown against Barrera.
