Richard Belzer dead at 78: Law & Order: SVU star best known for playing Detective John Munch for 15 seasons, dies

LAW & Order: Special Victims Unit star Richard Belzer has died aged 78.

Belzer was known for his role as Detective John Munch on the long-running crime series and his stand-up comedy career.

Belzer is believed to have died at his home in Bozouls, southwest France, on Sunday morning, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Bill Scheft, writer and longtime friend of Belzer, confirmed this to the publication.

“He had a lot of health issues and his last words were ‘Fuck you, motherfucker,'” explained Scheft.

A cause of death for the actor has yet to be confirmed.

Laraine Newman, a Saturday Night Live original cast member, took to Twitter to confirm the situation a new post.

“I am so sad to hear of Richard Belzer’s passing. I loved this guy so much. He was one of my first friends when I came to New York to do SNL,” Newman wrote.

“One of the funniest people of all time. A master of crowd work. RIP love.”

Newman worked with Belzer from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, according to TMZ.

Belzer starred in Law & Order: SVU for 15 seasons.
