NENE Leakes is suing the companies behind The Real Housewives of Atlanta, including Bravo and executive producer Andy Cohen.
She claimed that racism is “accepted” and that the companies tolerate a hostile and racist work environment.
The lawsuit says NeNe, 54, who is black, has complained to executives about years of racist remarks made by RHOA castmate Kim Zolciak-Biermann, 43, but that only NeNe has suffered consequences.
It names the defendants NBCUniversal, Bravo, the production companies True Entertainment and Truly Original, executives of the companies, and executive producer of Housewives Andy Cohen, but not Kim.
“NBC, Bravo and True promote a corporate and workplace culture in which racially insensitive and inappropriate behavior is tolerated — if not encouraged,” the lawsuit reads.
The Sun has reached out to representatives from Bravo and Kim for comment.
The lawsuit refers to numerous examples of alleged racist incidents.
One allegation is based on a scene in the first season of RHOA in 2008.
In the scene, Kim responds to the cast’s idea of attending a barbecue that NeNe will be attending by saying “words along the lines of ‘I don’t want to sit around and eat chicken with NeNe.'”
The lawsuit alleges that the comment “perpetuated an offensive stereotype about African Americans.”
Another claim relates to a scene in season five of the Bravo show in 2012.
The lawsuit alleges Kim made “racially offensive and stereotypical” comments about the area of NeNe’s new home, calling the neighborhood “ghetto.”
That same year, the lawsuit alleges, Kim used the N-word to refer to NeNe and other roommates after a falling out with them.
After NeNe sent their complaints to executives on the show, the lawsuit alleges they “did not end their relationship with Zolciak-Biermann or take other reasonable steps to end their racially objectionable conduct.”
Kim, who is both a singer and reality star, had her own spin-off show on Bravo, Don’t Be Tardy, which began in 2012 and aired for eight seasons through 2020.
ALL ABOUT NENE
NeNe made recurring appearances in ten seasons of RHOA between 2008 and 2020.
Aside from the lawsuit, her life was rocked by tragedy in 2021 when her husband Gregg Leakes died of cancer.
The reality star and the real estate investor first married in 1997 before divorcing in 2011.
However, the pair would reunite and walk down the aisle again in 2013.
A HOUSE IS NOT A HOME
After his death, which came after a four-year battle with colon cancer, NeNe sold the $3.5 million mansion they shared.
The 10,000 square foot property is located in a gated community outside of Atlanta that features a resort-style pool with a waterfall feature and beautiful landscape views of a nearby golf course.
After grieving the loss of her husband, NeNe reportedly was “absolutely open” to remarrying earlier this year.
Nene has now found love with businessman Nyonisela Sioh.
Although their relationship is relatively new, the couple have been vacationing together and Nene has shared photos of them on Instagram.
