Representing GOP Davis to seek re-election, skipping the race for governor

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – U.S. Representative Rodney Davis, who floated the idea of challenging Illinois Governor JB Pritzker next fall, said Tuesday he will seek a sixth term in Congress.

The Republican from Taylorville said his decision would be based on a map of the congressional district that Democrat Pritzker signed into law last week.

The new map, required after each annual census to reflect population change, includes District 15 redrawn to include Taylorville but not the territory currently in the other incumbent’s county. Davis released a statement indicating that 31 of the 35 county presidents and 15 state legislators in the new county support him.

“The Democrats in Washington have plunged our country into crisis with their big government, their socialist plans and dreams,” Davis said. “Republicans are expected to retake the House of Representatives next year, and I am ready to work with a new Republican majority to ultimately fire Nancy Pelosi and hold the Biden administration accountable for major failures. their.”

Democrats currently hold 13 of the state’s 18 seats. But Illinois lost a representative because of population decline. The Democrats who control the General Assembly, noting their party’s thin control of Congress and the large number of state legislatures mapped by the GOP, have created 14 pro-districts Democrats and three counties that appear safe for Republicans.

If he places his sites on the governor’s mansion, Davis would immediately become the highest profile challenger to Pritzker, who is seeking a second term. Republicans who have announced campaigns against the multi-billionaire are Sen. Darren Bailey of Xenia, businessman Gary Rabine, former State Senator Paul Schimpf and venture capitalist Jesse Sullivan.
