June is shaping up to be a good month for people who enjoy watching true crime documentaries. Netflix has a pretty good track record with documentaries, and in June we’ll catch up Keep sweet: pray and obeyfollowed by Web of Make Believe: Death, Lies, and the Interneta six-part anthology series from director Brian Knappenberger, Luminant Media and Imagine Documentaries.
If you’ve ever heard stories about the dark corners of the internet and the terrifying tales of people falling down rabbit holes and coming out the other end radicalized, then this documentary is the perfect watch. It’s a deep dive into the tangled web of digital deception and modern misinformation campaigns.
In addition to directing, Knappenberger will also serve as executive producer, alongside Eve Marson, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Justin Wilkes and Sara Bernstein.

As an anthology series Web of Make Believe will focus on various facets of online deception, examining everything from IRS raids to SWATing to fake beanie babies.

Web of Make Believe: Death, Lies & The Internet is a 6-part anthology series from director Brian Knappenberger, Luminant Media and Imagine Documentaries, telling stories of people caught in a dark and tangled web of modern-day misinformation and digital deception. The haunting, bizarre and timely series explores the aftermath of “SWATing”, takes a chilling trip down the white supremacy rabbit hole, joins a federal manhunt for the suspect in a brazen IRS heist and investigates a murder set against the backdrop of Russian election interference . Rich with distinctive characters and surprising storylines, reality is warped as the ordinary American household collides with a chaotic web of misinformation.
Web of Make Believe episode count and information
There are six episodes in total and each one deals with something different, apart from the last two episodes, which revolve around the hunt for an elusive hacker and are split into two parts. Here is the episode breakdown, provided by Netflix.
- Death by SWAT – When an online gamer makes a series of fraudulent 911 calls to lure SWAT teams to innocent people’s homes, his deliberate tricks end in tragedy.
- A murder in DC – The 2016 murder of political operative Seth Rich is fueling countless baseless conspiracy theories while the man’s family – and the truth – are at stake.
- I’m not a nazi – A woman shares her journey to becoming a mouthpiece for white nationalist hate speech, a job that culminates in high-profile violence and murder.
- sextortion – Several women recall their harrowing experience of a man’s heinous virtual blackmail attempts aimed at obtaining sensitive sexual material.
- The stingray, part 1 – From fake beanie babies to the very real tax fraud, two seasoned hackers revisit the cyber schemes that got them targeted by law enforcement.
- The stingray, part 2 – The FBI escalates its pursuit of an elusive hacker, but he soon turns the tables by questioning the legitimacy of a key tool in their investigation.
