The American Red Cross on Tuesday said it had declared a “blood crisis” for the first time as it faces the worst national blood shortage in the United States. about a decade.

“In the midst of this crisis, doctors are forced to make difficult decisions about who gets a blood transfusion and who has to wait until more products are available,” said the Red Cross. said in a statement. “Donating blood and platelets is essential to help prevent further delays in vital medical treatments.”

The nonprofit is calling for blood or platelet donations as soon as possible. Potential sponsors can book an appointment online at RedCrossBlood.org, by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or by downloading the Red Cross Blood Donor phone app on iPhone App Store or Android’s Google Play.

Despite the growing need for blood transfusions due to record hospital admissions, the Red Cross says it has seen a 10% drop in blood donations since the start of the pandemic. Low donor turnout has worsened since the delta variant started spreading – with the trend continuing as omicrons also spread.

Providing 40% of the nation’s blood supply, the Red Cross has had to limit blood distribution to hospitals in recent weeks, the organization wrote. “Some hospitals may not receive a quarter of the requested blood product. Blood cannot be produced or stocked and can only be provided through the kindness of volunteer donors.”

While donations of all blood types are welcome, O-positive and O-negative blood types, as well as platelet donations, are especially needed.

The recent COVID-19 spike precipitated in part by the omicron variant has resulted in an increased number of daily cases and hospitalizations.

With omicrons causing record infections in the US, many are left wondering which COVID-19 test is most effective.

In the United States, there have been more than 61 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and nearly 844,000 deaths, NBC News report.
