A woman died after being beaten to death with a pipe Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The beating took place shortly after 2 p.m. at an office building on the 300 block of Chestnut Street in Old City, according to authorities.
The suspect, a 48-year-old man, had at least one office on the eighth floor of the building where the incident took place, Philadelphia Police Chief Scott Small said.
The unnamed man took a bag containing two tubes and attacked the receptionist from New Jersey, Small said. Witnesses said blood and broken furniture were seen at the woman’s desk.
The woman was rushed to Jefferson Hospital in critical condition, where she died about an hour later. Nearly 20 calls to 911 were made during the beatings.
A worker on the floor where the attack took place, said security tackled the man in the hallway before police arrested him.
The man was arrested and brought to the murder by police officers for questioning. The motive for the fatal beating is unknown at this time, but police say the two have had arguments in the past.
