REBECCA WELCH will rewrite history once again as the first female referee to start an FA Cup third round match.
Welch has been appointed to referee the match between Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle on 8 January at St Andrews.
This is the oldest cup competition in the world that a female referee has ventured into.
It highlights Welch’s dramatic rise through the official ranks and changing face of English football.
She is also first woman in charge of an EFL . match back on 5 April when she was assigned the job at Harrogate Town versus Port Vale.
Welch, 38, said at the time that she did not consider herself a frontrunner.
She told Sports sky: “I’m still trying to let it sink in. I got the news on Saturday and haven’t come back to earth yet. I’m very fortunate to have been given this opportunity and I’m really excited about it.
“My dad is probably my biggest fan, so he passed the moon. My mother doesn’t know much about football. She was very excited, but I don’t think she knew why! They were real. pride.

“It’s not what I thought, when I decided to become a referee 11 years ago, I would join the Football League to make a game. It wasn’t even on my radar. .
“It seems like it’s been a whirlwind for the last 11 years and now we’re just a week away from one of the biggest games of my career.
“I’ve always said, through all my promotions, I want to be appointed because I’m in the top 10 match officials on that list. I never want to be appointed based on anything. nothing else. I trusted the system, and I was rewarded.”
Frenchwoman Stephanie Frappart was the referee for the Champions League match between Juventus and Dynamo Kiev.
In March of this year, she was in charge of the Netherlands’ World Cup qualifying match against Latvia.
