Before Team India Head Coach Ravi Shastri admitted that the team selected for World Cup 2019 leaving a lot to be desired. He was particularly confused by the decision to pick three goalkeepers. However, Shastri claims that he never interfered in selection matters.
The selection of India’s squad for the 2019 World Cup caused a huge uproar among fans and former cricketers. Ambati Rayudu was not selected after Virat Kohli publicly admitted during the build-up to the ICC event that he would be the team’s No. 4.
When asked to share his views on the confusing team selection, Shastri admitted that Rayudu or Shreyas Iyer should have been on the team instead of the three goalkeepers. Shastri said Times of India In an interview:
“I have no idea about that (picking the team). But I am not satisfied with the three goalkeepers selected for the World Cup. Ambati or Shreyas can enter. Logic of having MS Dhoni, Rishabh [Pant] and Dinesh [Karthik] All together?”
Shastri, however, added:
“But I never interfere in the work of the selectors, except when I am asked for feedback or as part of a general discussion.”
India had an impressive performance at the ODI World Cup 2019 held in England until their team lost to New Zealand in the semi-final in Manchester. In pursuit of the 240 goal, India fell to 24 in 4 centuries before Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni raised them in half a century. India, in the end, fell 18 points.
“It was September 2017, and I told him to ‘get ready’ for SA” – Ravi Shastri on Jasearch Bumrah’s Test Launch
Under Shastri’s tenure as head coach, India’s fast bowling has grown into one of the best business divisions. Jasosystem Bumrah has played a key role in making India a deadly bowling outfit.
While Bumrah first made a name for himself as a limited-tempo player, there are apprehensions about his Experimental utility due to his unconventional bowling action. But the bowler was quick to respond to his critics with a memorable Test launch in South Africa. Bumrah claims four burns in Cape Town, although India has dropped 72 times.
Shastri affirmed that he is confident that Bumrah will make his mark in South Africa in the Test series. The 59-year-old recalled:
“Cape Town was on my mind almost two months before we landed there. Me and (Bharat) Arun were participating in an activity in Kolkata during Durga Puja when I phoned Jasionary. It was September 2017, and I told him to ‘get ready’ for SA. That guy was unbelievable – all he said was ‘trying cricket is my dream’. “
Shastri added while praising Bumrah:
“The magic that he bowled in the second inning at Cape Town – that’s just what we expected him to do. And that’s just the beginning. He’s a quick learner and has an attitude. well. The only other bowling player in India that has made it so long as it takes to declare himself to the world – that this is a great thing – is Kapil Dev.”
