Grandparents often just want to enjoy time with their grandchildren, revel in their children’s success, and appreciate the growth of the family. However, others cannot let go of their parenting duties. They think it’s their job to keep each of their descendants down the line, becoming bossy and controlling. Even if their motives are legitimate, it causes drama when grandparents overstep their bounds.
This is the case with Alma Madrigal in Disney’s “Encanto”. The desire to keep the family at peace stems from a tragedy. As a young mother, she and her husband were forced to run away from home and he sacrificed himself for their safety. In her darkest hour, magic came to the rescue and their home, La Casa Madrigal, was built. She raised her family here and kept their children around.
In her desperation to make sure her family was safe, secure, and perfect, she missed the chance to really enjoy time with them. She cannot accept them for who they are, rather than what powers have been given to them. This is especially true in her relationship with her niece Mirabel. Because of her realization of the mistake in her approach and the honesty with which such a challenging family move is depicted in the film, she was shortlisted.
