A rare nickel has sold online for nearly $1,800.
This certified Buffalo Nickel was minted in Denver and designed by James Earle Fraser.
In 1911 Mr Fraser was asked by Treasury Secretary Franklin MacVeagh to draft a new 5 cent denomination.
According to the USA Coin Book, he received some design influence from the time he spent with the Sioux Indians and other Native Americans growing up in Minnesota.
And the American bison was on the brink of extinction, with numbers believed to be close to 1,000 at the time.
Mr. Fraser took this opportunity to engrave the bison on the reverse with an Indian head on the front.
How to recognize it
There is a special feature to the coin in the listing as it is not like the rest of the Buffalo nickels.
It features an error that occurs when the coin makes a mistake in the production process.
You’ll notice that it has three legs instead of the usual four.
In particular, one of the front legs is missing.
It is also marked with the D (Denver) mintmark found at bottom center on the reverse.
how much is it worth
While the edition is unknown, the error element makes it quite rare.
It’s worth $721 in average condition and up to $5,842 in uncirculated grades.
The 1937-D error piece on the listing sold after 30 bids for a total of $1,776.20.
According to the seller, it was certified by the CAC coin service in an AU 58 class.

Some collectors pay top dollar for error coins, even if they are well minted.
A great site to check if your coins are worth anything is eBay.
All you have to do is search for the full coin name, select the “sold” list, and then toggle the search to “highest value”.
If your coins are rare and valuable, you can sell them on eBay or visit a specialized site like Coinappraiser or USA Coin Book.
