Over the years, there has been surprisingly little consideration for how Alaskans and Canadians feel about “Gold Rush” miners moving in and using their homes to enrich themselves. themselves and become celebrities in the process. The Schnabels famously used the inexperienced Hoffman crew to their advantage in Season 1, but they were the local exception that proved the rule.
That all changed with the infamous Season 8 incident, where a conflict between several members of the Hoffman gang resulted in a local man opening fire on their truck. When the truck returned to camp to report what had happened, a panicked Todd Hoffman flew in and shut down operations, fearing (perhaps overwhelmingly) a coordinated attack.
The truth is more obscene, but also more telling; the shooter was simply a man who was annoyed by the show’s impact on his home. With the focus on the captains of each mining claim and the narrow path to their success each season, there is little room on the “Gold Rush” for even their non-mining family members. , the fewer people live and work near these requirements. The rest of the season has mostly gone business as usual, with Tony Beets battling another dredging plant and Parker once again beating last season’s gold production, but the specter of that attack still covers everything after that.
