Ralf Rangnick thrilled after Man Utd beat West Ham with controversial goal, gasping for final breath

RALF RANGNICK hailed Manchester United’s final breathless win over unlucky West Ham as ‘the best kind of victory’.

Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial caught up with sub-Marcus Rashford to score the only goal when the Red Devils finished 4th in the Premier League.

The Hammers limited United to a handful of opportunities and VAR only decided Cavani was on the side for the winner for the smallest amount of time.

But Rangnick told Sky Sports: “The atmosphere (in the dressing room) was fantastic. The boys celebrated just like that. They know what this big win is like.”

“It’s the best kind of victory when the other team isn’t back yet.

“We are extremely happy with the performance and the level of physicality we played with bearing in mind that we played three days ago at Brentford.

“We don’t always find the best solutions in the third half. In the last 20 minutes we’ve had too many shots on target with no real chances to score.

“We need to be a little more patient, but in the end we have to get all three points.

“We had to take some risks in the last 15 minutes but in the end I wanted to show the players that this game was won and I’m happy to have scored the last-minute goal.”

Unstable Martial and Cavani came on for only the final eight minutes, with Cristiano Ronaldo United’s sole starting striker playing the whole game

But it was the Frenchman’s pass that liberated Cavani, who slowed to clear the offside trap and overcame in the 62nd minute Rashford to cross.

And Rangnick told Sky Sports: “It takes patience to play West Ham.

“I’m very pleased when the three substitutes prepare and score the goal. They all participate. That’s all the more important.
