Ralf Rangnick tells Man Utd to STOP transfer cock-ups after blowing over £1bn since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement

RALF RANGNICK warned Manchester United the transfer woes have to stop if they want to bring back the glory days.

The Red Devils have blown more than £1billion in the nine years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired – but will surely finish behind rivals Manchester City for the ninth straight season on Sunday afternoon.

And interim manager Rangnick said: “It’s about having a clear transfer strategy, signing players who fit into this system – and both clubs have done that in the last five or six years.

“When I look at hers [City’s] Transfer politics and transfer success, they didn’t have many players who would say after a year or two that maybe it wasn’t the right signing.

“Both clubs have been quite successful – and this is where Manchester United need to go again.

“They were there under Sir Alex, but there have been quite a few different managers since then.”

While title-chasing duo Liverpool and Pep Guardiola’s City have been smash hits in the transfer market, United’s big-name signings have often flopped.

The likes of Romelu Lukaku, Angel Di Maria, and Alexis Sanchez all came for big bucks — or big wages — but they rarely justify the money. Last summer it was Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho but both struggled to live up to their bill.

Rangnick added: “You have to have an identity for how you want to play, even how the fans want to see us play.

“It has always been attractive, attacking, proactive football, entertaining football and from there making sure the recruitment is right.

“You have to be fast enough on the transfer market and sign the right players at the right moment.”

Rangnick recognizes that with a top four result it will be much easier to sign the cream of the crop from Europe and beyond.

He said: “Financially, everyone knows what that would mean. Of course it would be better if we were in the Champions League.

“And it could also make negotiations with new players easier.”
