Ralf Rangnick faces the biggest test of his Man Utd reign against West Ham but a win could lift the gloom surrounding the club

A STEADY ship is not what Manchester United fans want.

They want it fully played out front with a playing field ranked at the top of the league – or right now the top four will do.

But after the storm, sorry ends with Ole Solskjaer’s Reign, a stable ship is what they needed, and right now there’s an argument to say that’s exactly what they got.

Consists of Michael Carrick’s Three Impressive Games As Caring BossUnited have played 12 games since Solskjaer’s departure.

They won seven of them, drew four and lost only one.

One of those draws was a pointless game as far as United feared – against Young Boys topped their Champion’s League Group.

Another real must be a winner because they were 2-0 down by Aston Villa with 13 minutes left.

However, criticizing the Reds has become such a norm that you sometimes have to double-check the score to be sure they won when an assessment is even given of their win.

1-0 win over Aston Villa is a case in point.

Even in the 3-1 win over Brentford, 50% of the debate is about a worse first half than about how they took their chances in the second half.

That is a high that continues eight years after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

That expectation continues to have around the club.

Expectations right now, it can’t match.

But it’s better.

They are no longer the team that will be debunked by the likes of Leicester or Watford.

Indeed, I doubt they would even be overplayed compared to Liverpool or Manchester City if Rangnick sent his team out against them.

A team that concedes like a sieve have scored three clean sheets under Rangnick with just one goal conceded in five other games and two against Villa.

It is true that David De Gea has not been used much.

Rangnick seems to be dealing with a very different return to the four that frequently broke out towards the end of Ole Solskjaer’s reign.

Injuries and illness could lead to a number of options but he seems far more interested in his full-backs Diogo Dalot and Alex Telles at the moment – rather than Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Harry Maguire has discovered that the armband doesn’t automatically win him a spot either, although he will start today against West Ham with a rested Victor Lindelof – after breaking in at his home while he was on duty with Brentford.

Maguire has been sidelined, with a chest injury, or a rib injury, it looks like things have changed.

But he has been fit enough to sit on the bench in the last two games and that rib didn’t stop him as he came on for the final 19 minutes to help create a two-goal advantage this time around.

That’s when Rangnick adapted to the three in the back, having also started the game with a 4-3-3 – now it seems give up his much-vaunted 4-2-2-2.

Rangnick is slowly figuring out which tactics, formations and teams he likes best, and it includes Fred and Scott McTominay in midfield – and deservedly so.

Jadon Sancho missed the match against Brentford by a family memberent and will be out against the Hammers for the same reason, but he has a battle with unaccredited academy graduate Anthony Elanga.

Even Bruno Fernandes knows he’s not safe from being left out of the starting line-up against Wolves – while Cristiano Ronaldo’s name doesn’t allow him to play the full 90 minutes.

Witness his performance as he hit the field after 71 minutes at Brentford.

David Moyes’ visit of fourth-tier West Ham side to Old Trafford will be the biggest test of his reign so far.

Get over that with a win, though, and the negative narrative surrounding the club could start to change.

Stabilization had small signs that he was getting somewhere, not fast enough for many, but the ship needed to be stabilized and that’s what he did.
