Carrie’s parents both live full-time in a foster home and “didn’t believe” Carrie was in Qatar – but Kieran and Raheem helped Carrie surprise the couple.

Carrie said that due to her busy schedule, there is only one hour a day when she can talk to her parents via Zoom.

She said: “I couldn’t make it through the first seven days of the rush.

“I made a mental note that after the Iran game could be a pretty good time after the Flash Zone ended and I saw one of the coaches, John McDermott, do the same with his family and it was all taken care of and all the players were gone.”

She phoned her parents during the break in Qatar, but even after seeing the pitch and the England dugout, her mother wasn’t convinced.

Carrie then showed her parents the interview area and saw some of the England players in the tunnel.

She said: “It was really dark and I said, ‘You can probably see there’s some players.

Raheem overheard the conversation and walked over to wave to the journalist’s parents on Zoom.

Carrie recalls: “When he realized it was my mum and dad in a nursing home, he brought Kieran Trippier over and they waved and got engaged.

“My father had no words and my mother didn’t know what to think!”

Carrie said it meant the world to her mother and father, as well as the doctors and nurses at the nursing home.

The selfless act will never be forgotten by Carrie, who said: “The nurses and doctors who got so many people through Covid will never forget the day Raheem and Kieran spent some time at their care home.

“And that will stay with me longer than any goal of this tournament.”

Carrie narrated the event during a live broadcast last week and a Video of the interview has touched hearts on Twitter.

One user replied: “Tears here. Thanks for sharing this, Carrie. I’m in a similar position to my dad, so it’s so heartwarming.”

Another hailed the players: “Wow this now amazing Carrie – such a beautiful heartbreaking story and kudos to the England lads for that.”

It comes after England were eliminated from the tournament with a 2-1 loss to France in Saturday’s quarter-finals game.
