The only exception to the new rule is Queen Elizabeth II’s stand on Epsom Derby Day – and the racecourses not owned by the Jockey Club, including Ascot and its Royal Assembly.

“Indecent” costumes or clothing of any kind and replica athletic shirts remain on the prohibited list.

Bosses said the radical move was an attempt to make racing “more accessible and inclusive” – although Nigel Farage said it was a sign that “there are no standards left in this country”.

Rather than digging out old tweed, the Chiefs want players to “dress in whatever way makes you feel most comfortable and confident”.

Nevin Truesdale, Chief Executive of The Jockey Club, explained the decision: “Horse racing has always been a sport enjoyed by people from all backgrounds and it’s really important to us to be accessible and inclusive.

“We hope that by no longer imposing expectations on people about what they should and shouldn’t wear, we can help highlight that racing is truly for everyone.

“A big part of that is wearing clothes that you’re comfortable in.

“While The Jockey Club has a rich heritage and history, it is also a forward-thinking organization that values diversity and inclusion and always strives to reflect modern trends.

“As we reviewed this area of the race day experience, we realized that in the eyes of many of our race-goers, enforcing a dress code in the 21st century seems rather outdated.

“Of course that doesn’t mean we stop people from dressing up for a day at the races if they want to.

“This is about giving people the choice and opportunity to go to the races dressed in what makes them feel most comfortable and confident whilst also accommodating the challenges that the UK weather regularly presents!”

The Jockey Club welcomes four million people to its racetracks for flat and jump tournaments each year.
