Ben, who had been in the country since January, was in a car when he and two friends, Claudio and Alfredo, were shot dead.

His parents, former principals Andrew Corser and Lorraine Downes, and his brother Tom Corser said he was “in the wrong place at the wrong time”.

The devastated family said Ben “has become part of the community” in Mexico and is having a “very happy and sociable time.”

They said: “Ben has been in Mexico since January 2022 where he has had a very happy and sociable time, living in different parts of Mexico, becoming part of the community and also getting out and about a bit.

“Recently, Ben was living with a Mexican-American family near Colima City. Two of the young men in the household (Claudio and Alfredo) were skateboarders and Ben joined them in skating.

“On Tuesday evening, May 24, 2022, Ben and Claudio come back from Guadalajara by bus and Alfredo picks them up in the car.

“They were walking down the main boulevard in Colima and stopped at a supermarket to get some food for mom.

“While they were in the car in front of the supermarket, all three young men were shot, including Ben who was in the back seat.

“We had no explanation, no justification, no indication of robbery, kidnapping or anything else.

“No doubt the police will eventually complete their investigation and let us know what they think happened – Colima has had a dramatic upturn in recent weeks but it hasn’t been aimed at tourists at all.

“There’s a good chance Ben (and Claudio and Alfredo) were tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“Thank you for all your loving expressions of regret and support and all the offers of help – St Just, Ben’s vast network of friends have provided vital comfort to the family at this appalling time of grief. Many Thanks.”

Ben’s body is brought back to Britain for a funeral at St Just in Cornwall.

Prosecutor spokesman Gustavo Adrián Joya Cervera said: “We are in contact with several government agencies at the federal level to clarify this issue.”

Ben’s death is the latest in a wave of violence in Colima – but he is the first foreigner to be killed.

Local reporter Bertha Reynoso said: “Engineer Ben Marshall Corser is the first foreign victim of this wave of violence seen in Colima since January 25.”

Nearly 400 people were reportedly killed in the crime wave.

Ben is the second Cornish person to be shot dead in Mexico this year.

Chris Cleave, 54, was driving through Playa del Carmen in Cancun when he was murdered in March.

He was driving around the resort in his red Audi when he was ambushed by two men, who opened fire on a motorcycle.

The property mogul was killed instantly after being hit in the head by a bullet, while his 14-year-old daughter – who was with him at the time – was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
